Well, Winter is well and truly here, so time to look at three plants that are highlights in the winter garden.

|
Nandina domestica ‘Gulfstream’ – Sacred Bamboo
Winter is when Nandinas really come into their own. The colder the weather, the brighter red the foliage. Attractive all year round, and famously tough, the Sacred Bamboo is unrelated to true bamboos, and actually part of the Berberis family. Coping well with poor soils, heat, drought and neglect, ‘Gulfstream’ is a dwarf variety that forms attracted clumps. They look particular good against Acer p. ‘Senkaki’, where the red steams of the bare tree compliment the rich red colour of the Nandina winter foliage.

Westringia fruticosa – Native Rosemary
With the rise in popularity of both Native and Mediterranean gardens, the Native Rosemary is perfect for either style. Evergreen, winter-flowering, and forming a large mound-shaped bush, the Native Rosemary can also be clipped, shaped or hedged. Tough, thriving in poor soils, coastal conditions and full sun, it is becoming deservedly more popular. It looks great planted with olives, and does well in similar conditions.

Elaeocarpus reticulates – Blueberry Ash
Although flowering in spring and summer, the Blueberry Ash is notable at this time of year for the amazing ‘frosting’ on the leaves. Older leaves get a waxy build-up which gives the appearance of frost on the leaves. At any time of year this beautiful tree earns its keep in the garden. The new foliage is lighter, giving a contrast to the older, darker foliage, and the ‘frosting’ on the older foliage makes the contrast even more marked. The flowers are very pretty, though they can be a bit masked by the foliage. The form is upright and dense, making it an excellent screen tree.
