CAMS has proposed several changes to the future Federal OH&S Act to assist volunteer groups and event organisers to meet future health and safety obligations.
In a submission to Safe Work Australia (SWA), CAMS took the opportunity to highlight OH&S issues confronting CAMS and its stakeholders and highlighted amendments in the areas of:
- Maintaining a volunteer based sport in consideration of OH&S legislation;
- Definition of workplace;
- Notifiable Incidents, and
- Consultation, participation and representation
Prominence was given to these areas to ensure that the new Act is effective and responsive to the needs of motor sport.
The Federal Government recently announced an initiative to harmonise the OH&S Acts in each state through SWA.
SWA has been tasked with development of the model legislation and regulations.
Stakeholder feedback has been encouraged and a CAMS submission was provided which also included CAMS' response to a series of questions which have been taken from the Exposure Draft Discussion Paper.
SWA will now analyse all written submissions received. Following its analysis of submissions, SWA will produce a final version of the Model OH&S ACT as well as supporting material for Workplace Relations' Ministers Council for consideration in December 2009.
It is expected that the new, harmonised OH&S laws will be adopted by all states, territories and the Commonwealth by the end of 2011.
